Voltaren contains the active ingredient diclofenac. It belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Voltaren is used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and swelling, and to reduce the symptoms of an attack of arthritis.
Voltaren is used to treat the symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Voltaren may be used for other reasons as determined by your doctor.
Do not take Voltaren if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, any other NSAIDs, or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. If you are also allergic to paracetamol or ibuprofen and have asthma or hives, have ever had an allergic reaction to any medicine used to relieve pain, inflammation or swelling, and are taking other medicines, such as corticosteroids, tell your doctor before taking Voltaren.
Some medicines can affect how Voltaren works. It may cause stomach bleeding, an effect of which is called an anemia.
Your doctor will decide if Voltaren is right for you. It may help if you can tell by feeling or by smell that you are suffering from an anemia.
If Voltaren is not right for you, your doctor may increase your dose. You may need to take extra aspirin to prevent stomach bleeding.
You may feel or have experienced a skin reaction or itching when taking Voltaren. If you experience these symptoms, your doctor will tell you what to do.
Asthma is the commonest breathing disorder after the age of 50. It causes wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, swelling, and shortness of breath. When taken with aspirin or other NSAIDs, aspirin can increase the chance of having an asthma attack. You can get asthma attacks after taking Voltaren. This could be if you have asthma, have had asthma before and have had an asthma attack. But most of the time it doesn't happen.
If you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, or any other NSAIDs, you may feel or have experienced an allergic reaction to paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Voltaren and increase your dose as needed.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had a heart disease or high blood pressure, or if you have diabetes or high blood pressure.
If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, your doctor will tell you what to do.
It may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you know how the medicine affects you.
It can also make you tired or dizzy when you first start taking the medicine. You may feel lightheaded or faint-like.
Do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor.
If you have not told your doctor about any of the above, tell them before you start taking this medicine.
